Virtual Reality Training to Support an Unmanned Ground Vehicle

In partnership with ForgeFX, MRIGlobal created a fully functional, cutting-edge, virtual simulator for training on the remote operation of an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV). These efforts enabled operators to become familiar with the UGV hardware and software, while also tele-operating the unmanned reconnaissance vehicle, in a simulated environment. As a result, the simulator allows effective and efficient end-user training on unique systems and limited material resources regardless of location of the trainee or asset.
Although traditional learning methods such as lectures, reading material, videos, and demonstrations are a tried-and-true means of providing technical information to learners, simulator-based instruction can accelerate and enhance comprehension of equipment functionality and operational procedures in many ways. Simulated equipment and environments give trainees “hands-on” experience before they ever touch real-world machines. Virtual Simulators also provide:
  • Reinforced Education – Onscreen instructions prompt the user through the tutorials. This combination of reading the directions and immediately acting upon them in the simulator increases familiarity with the equipment and begins development of muscle memory that aids in response time and accuracy.
  • Consistency – Structured tutorials ensure all operators receive the same education and use the same approved techniques in order to maximize safety and efficiency. Trainees may work at their own pace to comprehend the material.
  • Verisimilitude – Virtual 3D visualized equipment replicates the real world with a high degree of accuracy. Audio cues such as engine noise, switch clicks, and alarms replicate the authentic experience of hands-on operation.
  • Gamification – The application of game-design elements and principles in non-game contexts is called gamification. Using gamification in training simulators improves user engagement and focus, training efficiency, and ease of use. This directly translates into a well-trained group of operators, meeting the goal of the project.

MRIGlobal and ForgeFX Simulations Partner to Advance CBRN Special Operations Simulator

The Joint Program Executive Office for Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Defense (JPEO-CBRND) has selected MRIGlobal and ForgeFX Simulations to bring the latest advances in simulation-based training programs to its Nuclear Biological Chemical Reconnaissance Vehicle (NBCRV) technology and deployment strategies. As the military continues to modernize and upgrade its hardware and software capabilities, its training must keep pace to ensure warfighters remain at the top of their game. The newest installment to these programs will update the JPEO-CBRND’s Tele Operations Simulator for the modern UAS (Unmanned Aerial Systems) used by the military today. First produced in 2020, the Tele-Op Simulator is among a series of simulation-based training and visualization products that MRIGlobal and ForgeFX Simulations have collaborated on for the US Government. The original simulator includes a virtual Polaris MRZR equipped as an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV). Mounted with previous prototype Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) detection equipment and activated with onboard controls, the UGV is piloted via a customized version of the ATAK (Android Team Awareness Kit) application. Using a module that recreates the ATAK interface, the simulator allows trainees to activate and remotely drive the virtual UGV across several square kilometers of virtual terrain, exactly as they would in the field. Designing, Developing, Deploying, and Supporting Augmented Reality-Based CBRN Device Training Simulations

We'd like to thank Augmented World Expo for inviting us to present at Augmented World Expo, 2023 last week at the Santa Clara Convention Center, and for posting the talk online for all to see:
https://www.youtube.com/embed/-yOnL3D_kp8

ForgeFX CEO, Greg Meyers, and CPO, Scott LaForge, presented this session covering the augmented reality-based CBRN detection device training simulators we're developing for the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) through the JPEO for Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Defense (JPEO-CBNRD) in collaboration with research institute, MRIGlobal, and CBRN detection device manufacturers, including Teledyne FLIR.

The JPEO-CBRND partnered with MRIGlobal and ForgeFX Simulations to produce The CBNRD HoloTrainer, a networked multiuser Microsoft HoloLens 2 augmented reality training simulator for Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear detection device operators. This presentation will cover the entire project lifecycle, including government requirements and the development of holographically projected interactive virtual equipment, culminating in deployment to soldiers. The CBRND HoloTrainer is a groundbreaking spatial computing application that significantly increases the effectiveness of its users.

ForgeFX Simulations & MRIGlobal Develop an Augmented Reality CBRN Detection Device Training Simulator for US Military

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES, May 30, 2023/EINPresswire.com/ -- The U.S. Department of Defense Joint Program Executive Office for Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Defense (JPEO-CBRND) has contracted MRIGlobal and ForgeFX Simulations to develop an augmented reality (AR) CBRN detection device training simulator. The Enhanced Warfighter Augmented Trainer (EWAT), or HoloTrainer, is a training simulator designed specifically for the Joint Project Manager Chemical Biological Radiological Nuclear Special Operations Forces (JPM CBRN SOF) to provide first responders and warfighters with the best possible training to identify hazardous materials and situations accurately.
The training simulator program is powered by a Microsoft HoloLens 2, projecting holographic interactive digital twins of physical devices. The application includes guided training lessons for all major functions the device performs, with voice-over-narration and text instruction. Users can learn at their own pace, by doing actual tasks and steps needed to master use of the real-world device. In addition, the HoloTrainer allows users to train with physical devices, seeing holographically projected animations and instructions on the heads-up-display (HUD) in front of them, allowing them to keep their hands on the device at all times. The application also supports networked multi-user connectivity, enabling trainers and trainees to work together remotely as if in the same room.
