JLG Partners with ForgeFX Simulations to Develop Virtual Reality Training Simulator

JLG® Industries, Inc., an Oshkosh Corporation company and a global manufacturer of aerial work platforms and telehandlers, will showcase its new AccessReady XR® Operator Training simulator at the ARA Show, February 18-20 in Anaheim, California, at booth #5441. This launch to the commercial market will offer JLG customers the ability to train and improve the skills of boom lift equipment operators in a safe, virtual environment.

JLG AccessReady XR provides virtual reality-based training for operators of all skill levels, with everything from controls familiarization to machine operation and advanced spatial awareness challenges. This type of immersive training optimizes the learning experience while preparing operators to efficiently use the controls and familiarize themselves with boom lift operation.

The simulator launch is the result of a year-long global pilot program that included introductions of the technology at numerous trade-show events, in addition to volumes of global customer feedback, designed to enhance the experience. The simulator was developed in partnership with ForgeFX Simulations, which specializes in 3D and visualization software.

“It’s been a privilege to pilot the AccessReady XR system for JLG this past year,” said Steve Wozniak, product support representative for Cloverdale Equipment Company. “My customers look forward to working with the VR kit at operator training classes. I’ve found it to be an extremely helpful training tool overall, but especially with my novice personnel. Putting them in the JLG VR system gives them real-world experience in a safe environment.”

“We are excited to bring this revolutionary virtual reality training program to our customers,” said Rick Smith, senior director, global product training for JLG Industries. “After years of testing, we feel this technology will help train boom lift operators faster and more effectively, which will significantly help to improve safety and job site performance.”

JLG is committed to helping customers meet and exceed new ANSI standards through machine design, safe use, and training. The AccessReady XR Operator Training simulator is the newest addition to the company’s growing training portfolio. This includes easy-to-access training courses to ensure operators and supervisors are compliant with standards.

Benefits of the JLG AccessReady XR Operator Training simulator include:
  • Safe environment for training operators
  • Increased “hands-on” controls training for reduced time to proficiency
  • Improved quality of practice time, allowing operators to experience real-life applications more quickly
  • Reduced trainee idle time to increase practice while evaluations are performed
  • Reduced evaluation time, since knowledge of the controls occurs faster
  • Real-time feedback to accelerate training knowledge
Other key features of the JLG AccessReady XR Operator Training Program include real-world controls, “virtual hands” (unique to JLG), a networked multi-user mode, multiple training environments (including proving grounds and construction sites), selectable virtual avatars for multi-user scenarios, an instructor-led mode, and tools to create unique password-protected scenarios and customized performance metrics.

The JLG AccessReady XR package includes:
  • 4′ JLG 800S platform with controls and foot switch
  • HTC Vive VR headset with headphones and Leap Motion camera
  • HTC Vive sensors and tracker
  • VR-ready PC pre-loaded with JLG AccessReady XR software
  • Keyboard with touch pad and monitor for PC
  • Portable cabinet for housing the PC and VR components
  • System setup and operating instructions

JLG VR Training Simulator at Vision VR/AR Summit

Thank you to everyone who participated in last week's Vision VR/AR Summit in Hollywood, CAwhat a show! ForgeFX Training Simulations was honored to demonstrate the JLG Immersive Trainer, a virtual reality-based industrial equipment training simulator, that we developed for JLG Industries, Inc. JLG's VR-based equipment simulator provides training on everything from machine control familiarization, to equipment operation, to advanced spatial awareness challenges.

JLG Industries, Inc., an Oshkosh Corporation company and a leading global manufacturer of aerial work platforms and telehandlers, partnered with ForgeFX Training Simulations to develop the JLG Immersive Trainer, a virtual reality industrial training simulator for JLG equipment. The JLG Immersive Trainer was featured in the at the 2017 Unity Vision VR/AR Summit Showcase, where attendees could "meet the innovators pioneering the best in virtual, augmented, and mixed realities from around the world.".

Virtual Reality Industrial Training Simulator

Virtual reality and industrial training simulators are a marriage made in heaven. By deploying industrial equipment training simulators as VR applications, we are able to deliver a virtual training experience that is far more immersive than traditional screen-based training simulators. The JLG VR Equipment Training Simulator, in addition to featuring interactive real-time stereoscopic 3D environments and equipment types, includes head, hand and positional tracking, which gives the trainee the ability to interact with the virtual world and machinery in a dramatically lifelike and realistic fashion.

By integrating fully functional real-world equipment controls, and corresponding in-simulation virtual controls, the JLG Immersive Trainer provides an extremely interactive and immersive virtual industrial training simulator.

Unity Vision VR/AR Summit 2017

The Vision VR/AR Summit, sponsored by Unity Technologies, is an event for artists, engineers, programmers, designers, musicians, directors, producers, hardware manufacturers and researchers. The content and networking are focused on furthering the knowledge base of anyone developing virtual and/or augmented reality content in Unity. This year's showcase featured dozens of great talks and demonstrations from some of the biggest companies and contributors that are advancing the use of virtual and augmented reality.

JLG Industries Aerial Work Platform Training Simulators by ForgeFX

ForgeFX is proud to be a simulator development partner of JLG Industries, Inc., the world's leading designer and manufacturer of aerial work platforms, telehandlers and other access equipment. The huge success JLG has achieved presents them with a challenge, how to provide training for such a large number of new operators. An interactive training simulator, which is widely deployable, is precisely what JLG needed in order to meet this challenge.

Certain equipment and processes are the best candidates for interactive 3D simulation-based training. The first criteria is high-value machinery. Simulation-based training makes the most sense when the relative cost to develop the simulation is low in comparison to the cost of the equipment itself. The next criteria relates to spatial relations. 3D interactive simulations make the most sense for equipment which operates in the context of its surrounding environment, and are themselves complex in their layout and difficult to represent with flat paper-based training materials. JLG's aerial work platforms meets all of these criteria, allowing simulation-based training to yield a large return on investment.

JLG Adds Custom Simulator to its Training Tools
JLG Industries has added a lift and access equipment simulator to its arsenal of teaching tools at its recently expanded training center in McConnellsburg, PA. The simulator employs advanced gamification learning to familiarize operators with the controls and operation of the JLG 800S telescopic boom lift. The equipment simulator virtually replicates JLG’s proving grounds at its customer training center, a four-acre tract of land that includes obstacle courses designed to train participants in the operation of JLG equipment.

JLG Simulator Starts Training at the Safest Height
At their facility in McConnellsburg, PA, JLG has created a testing and training facility that duplicates many aspects of a typical real-world job site. To train on site with experts at the proving grounds is an invaluable experience. However, the real-world proving grounds can’t handle the volume, nor can everyone handle the expense of on-site travel and training. In the JLG Equipment Simulator, ForgeFX has created a true-to-life replica of the Proving Grounds, allowing an unlimited number of students to gain much of what is gained in the real-world experience.

Training for boom lift operation presented controls familiarization and spatial awareness challenges. ForgeFX met these challenges for JLG by developing the JLG Equipment Training Simulator allowing operators to learn and practice both safety and productivity in a virtual environment.
